Former Research Fellow for the Institute for Public Policy Research (1999-2002). Worked at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (2000-01) and at the Communities Directorate of the Home Office. Associate Director of the Young Foundation (2005-2010).

Personal Overview - Regained this seat for Labour in 2010 following its capture by George Galloway, former Labour MP and Respect Party Leader in 2005. Originally from Bangladesh, she moved to the UK with her family at the age of 7. She has worked locally in Bethnal Green for the Young Foundation (centre for social innovation), where she was responsible for research and international work. For example working on a major research programme on 'Mapping Needs' backed by the ESRC and the Big Lottery Fund. She has experience of working with people at a grass roots level, helping for example to develop Language Line (a telephone interpreting service to help people with language difficulties in cases of emergency). She also assisted the Lord Young of Dartington (author of the 1945 Labour Party manifesto) in setting up the Tower Hamlets Summer University (Futureversity). She was also involved in setting up SummerUni London to improve the lives of young people and reduce youth crime.

Has been involved running a small business for over 23 years with experience negotiating in in Europe on behalf of her UK clients. She has campaigned to reduce regulation on business, reducing EU waste and fraud and on the sensible managing of migration. She also has experience raising funds for charity, as a former Chair of the Mayor of Barnet's Charity Appeal 2005/06 raising money for the mental health charity MIND.
