Hot new talent to enter the Furnace

A night of fresh, young artists and performers is fanning the flames of south west London underground talent.

The Furnace is a new monthly performance arts event at the George pub, Balham, which showcases the freshest and most explosive talent in live music, theatre, spoken word, comedy and short-film. The team behind the shows say the resulting atmosphere will be that of a (creative) furnace: passionate, unpredictable, spontaneous and exciting.

The inaugural lighting of the furnace takes place next Wednesday, and includes cutting-edge theatre company, LiveWire, who present Sculpt, an emotive and challenging exploration into the power of names. Also on stage will be Hephzibah, a project comprising of a spoken word artist and a cellist, provide a unique set of poetic soundscapes, backed by experimental and energetic performance.

Jibe Productions will present their hilarious set of sketch comedy which plays on the surreal, the absurd and the tragic. And completing the bill is the magical voice of Hayley Bishop, a stunningly gifted singer, who, joined by her band for this event, will provide a unique blend of soul and folk.

Each act gets 25 minutes of fame, and each month sees a shake-up of the bill, using in-house artists and visiting acts - no two Furnaces will burn the same.

The Furnace; the George Pub, 14-16 Balham Hill, SW12 9EB, Wednesday, January 30 (and the last Wednesday of every month), doors 7pm, show 8pm, £5/£4. For more information, please ring The Furnace on 07940123541.
