Fun for all the family: Dancing the afternoon away at Baby Loves Disco
Fun for all the family: Dancing the afternoon away at Baby Loves Disco

Clubbers just get younger and younger. For years now, provincial towns across England have been awash with 15-year-old bum-fluffed boys and dolled-up girls trying to get into over-18 clubs, but they have nothing on Baby Loves Disco.

The afternoon dance party designed for children and parents has arrived from America, where it has been the talk of the creche, and the Clapham Grand is hosting its inaugural British bash.

Sponsored by Heart FM, it hopes to provide a few hours of fun that both parent and child will enjoy. Something that is not always easy, says Heart FM DJ Emma B, who will be spinning the discs at the Grand.

She said: "Kids inevitably like bright, noisy, loud things that are cheesy and tacky in the extreme, which is fine, but it is nice to have something relevant to adults as well.

"My little four-year-old Edie absolutely loves Crazy Frog, and that would be an instant floorfiller, but I'm a firm believer in not patronising kids. For every song they might like from the album by Lazy Town the CBeebies band they will also like Gorillaz or Girls Aloud or some housey, dancey music.

"Kids have been dancing since the year dot but this is in an atmosphere adults will like and they have really thought about the music.

"You can have a cocktail or a glass of wine and kid yourself that you're having a night out, while you watch your child go nuts to a song!

All clubs have an age limit, of course, and Baby Loves Disco is open to littl'uns aged six months to seven years with a parent.

And if the music doesn't quite keep them occupied, then the bubble machines, baskets of instruments, and chill-out room (with tents, books and puzzles) will. Add in the nappy changing stations, and a full spread of snacks and BLD seems to have everything covered.

And Emma has also identified a more sneaky - if pragmatic - benefit to Baby Loves Disco.

"The great thing is that, if they've been dancing around for an hour or two, they will be absolutely shattered and will fall asleep straight afterwards," she said.

"It's all part of the cunning plan!"
