On the rocks: mountains, landscapes and biological molecules are sources of inspiration
On the rocks: mountains, landscapes and biological molecules are sources of inspiration

Having studied together, worked together and exhibited together, artists Tessa Coe, John Edwards and Petra Klomp have a pretty good understanding of each other's work.

"Bouncing ideas off each other is what it's all about," John said. "We criticise each others work all the time."

The three Southampton artists have worked together since they met in the Eighties while studying at Juno Studios. Quite appropriately, they have called their exhibition Common Origins.

"We have a long history," Tessa explained. "The strength for us is in having a common language. There's a pool of strength to draw upon."

Despite subtly influencing each other's work over the years, their styles and subjects remain distinct.

Tessa said: "I suspect if you look at our work over time, you can detect how we have influenced each other, but it doesn't smack you in the face."

While John and Petra's oil paintings are predominantly of mountains and landscapes, Tessa's recent acrylic paintings have focused on something slightly smaller: biological molecules.

She said: "I'm interested in the minute things that make life work - they're like little machines.

"It's a sort of mystery thing - to do with the wonder of these little things that are so crucial and beautiful."

John hopes visitors will be treated to 'a visual extravaganza that is very colourful and, I would hope, thought provoking'.

"We all paint about what we feel," he said. Quoting the American artist Mark Rothko, he explained: "There is no such thing as good painting about nothing."
