At the art of the Palace

Crystal Palace artist Stuart Mayes talks to Kerry Ann Eustice about why community arts events are so important.

EXPERIMENTAL and traditional arts will come together when Crystal Palace's creative community joins forces to present the two-week Signals 5 multi-media arts festival, for the fifth year in a row.

Crystal Palace (CP) Artists - a 50-strong group living and working in the area - organises the event to build strong community ties as well as reflect the area's vibrant arts scene.

Art, music, film, drama and literature will take place in unorthodox settings such as estate agencies, garden centres, book shops, or bakeries.

Artist and CP member Stuart Mayes is among the exhibitors. He appears fresh from this year's renowned art event the Venice Biennale, where he was hand-picked to appear by artist and critic David Barrett.

Stuart said: "I like Signals because it's vital arts events such as this happen in communities and I like to be part of that. I live in Crystal Palace and I have a commitment to the area.

"Signals is not about what art school you went to, we make it inclusive."

Stuart feels Crystal Palace has a rare, genuinely welcoming art scene.

He said: "I used to live in Hackney where it is quite elitist and there is no focus on making arts a local event.

"Signals has such diversity. We will exhibit in shops, restaurants and cafes and this helps to build relationships with those people. We find a way to make art a part of people's lives."

To bring his work to the people, Stuart is presenting a live art piece titled Bed for the festival on September 1, as part of the Day of Intimacy event.

His canvas will be the courtyard pavement outside Antenna Studios in Haynes Lane.

He said: "It's going to be a 6ft sq piece, the size of my bed. I'm interested in looking at private and public spaces."

By creating a chalk bed, Stuart hopes to elude to modernism and works such as Tracy Emin's My Bed.

"I'm going to leave it out until it erode, dissolves or gets walked away and there are just traces of it, he said.

"This interests me, it exists but it now out of my control."
