Picturesque: Honeywood Heritage Centre
Picturesque: Honeywood Heritage Centre

Visiting the Honeywood Heritage Centre makes for a tranquil experience, and if the summer ever begins, it will be even more gratifying. But there are plenty of reasons to wile away an afternoon at the (chiefly) Victorian period house.

Honeywood's own collection of paintings is too good to be gathering dust in a storage room, so they are coming out to play, as the centre's Jane Howard explains: "The colle-ction is a mixture and delib-erately so, to show breadth of works we have in the museum.

"They date from the 18th century right up to about 1980 and many of them centre around Carshalton. The ponds have always been a Mekkah for artists as it's so pretty.

"Stylistically we have pencil drawing, watercolours, oil paintings, all sorts really."

The pictures will be on show until September 18.

Homing in on one particular local artist, a selection of Albert Houghton's paintings are also on show until July 29.

A Carshalton resident for most of his life, Albert painted full-time after retiring from teaching art at Mitcham secondary school.

A founder member and president of Carshalton and Wallington Art Group, his fine touch with watercolours came into its own in the Wapping Group of Artists, who document the ever-changing face of the River Thames.

"Albert was waving the flag locally, supporting the local groups," says Jane, "and quite a few people around he will have taught and will remember him quite well. So we thought his work was due an airing."

It all might be lacking a few flashing lights and levers for the young'uns to enjoy, so try Honeywood's children's activity day this Sunday (from 2-5pm), which features a house full of craft activities, trails, puzzles and games.

Honeywood Heritage Centre; Honeywood Walk, Carshalton, 11am-5pm Weds-Fri, 10am-5pm Sat-Sun, adults £1.60, children 80p (free admission to shop and tea rooms), call 020 8770 4297 or visit friendsofhoney wood.co.uk.
