The beating heart of Irish artists
Serene: Brian Smyth's oil paintings
Serene: Brian Smyth's oil paintings

The Barbara Stanley Gallery in Putney is the beating heart of Irish artists in south London and it proudly presents its summer exhibition - The Art Of Music by Brian Smyth and Joseph Sloan.

The collection of warm and enticing oil paintings by Smyth, and Sloan's near- abstract bronze sculptures will appear together until the end of August.

Sloan, an award-winning artist, has has been invited to exhibit in the 2007 Florence Biennale in December.

He says: "My sculptures evoke aspects of the human condition which I look at on as many levels as possible, returning sometimes to the same themes on which I worked 30 years ago.

"Sculpture permits me to embrace humankind - the many sides of his nature, his music, his leisure, his pleasures and his strivings.

"As to my style, I have no conscious desire to let myself be influenced by anyone else."

Brian Smyth's subdued oils on canvas concentrate on the woman's face as a reservoir of expression and emotion.

His calm, romanticised paintings have a dreamy, serene quality, and an air of self-containment.

Brian Smyth and Joseph Sloan; Barbara Stanley Gallery, 279 Upper Richmond Road, Putney; until August 31, Tues-Sat 11am-6pm, visit irishartinlondon.com, call 020 8789 8088.
