East Finchley Open, the suburb’s group for artists, designers and craftspeople, holds its ninth annual Open House event over the next two weekends, offering you the opportunity to visit local artists in their homes and studios.

This year, more than 60 of the group’s members will be on hand in 14 homes in East Finchley, showcasing their paintings, prints, ceramics, photographs, textiles, wood, glass and jewellery.

One jewellery designer in particular is looking forward to the weekends, as she has only recently turned her hand to the craft. Gaby Gassner was one of the leading specialist black and white photographic printers after moving to London from her native Germany in the 1990s, but is now making a name for herself in the world of jewellery making after the industry went digital.

“I’d always liked jewellery,” says Gaby, 41, who has lived in East Finchley for five years, “and when a necklace of mine broke and I had a go at mending it, that got me hooked.”

Gaby specialises in contemporary style bracelets, earrings and necklaces made of beads, semi-precious stones and glass, and she also works with tropical woods and fibre optic glass known as cat’s eye.

East Finchley Open House is at 14 houses in East Finchley from 11am to 6pm on Saturday, 7 July and Sunday, July 8 and Saturday, July 14 and Sunday, July 15. Details: www.eastfinchleyopen.org.uk
