Artists have been known to use a wide variety of media, just think of Damien Hurst, but Watford Grammar student Matthew Green’s habit of dipping into his own nasal blood to create artworks is still somewhat unusual.

Matthew, who studied Fine Art at Watford Girls examined a theme of blood art in his final year project and his work is now on display at Watford Area Arts Forum’s Summer Exhibition, alongside that of fellow students Katie Kibbler and May Yan.

Watford Grammar’s head of art Georgie Wheeler says: “The work submitted by Fine Art final year pupils was on the theme of Discord. Consequently a wide variety of eye-catching, humorous and in some cases disturbing work was produced.”

Matthew’s nasal effluvia certainly fits into the latter category. Georgie says: “His expressive self-portraits are painted with his own nasal blood and in later stages pigs’ blood.

Katie Kibbler’s eye-catching poster designs and May Yan’s punk Prince Charles also made the grade.

Georgie adds: “Katie’s final piece is a large scale mixed media portrait combining retro pattern cutting paper with bold and figurative painting. She juxtaposed this with thought provoking statements linked to domestic violence statistics.

“May Yan, considered extreme contrasts, exploring fictional representations of the royal family as punk rockers. Her final portrait comically captures Prince Charles as an iconic red topped punk, very fitting.”

WAAF’s Summer Exhibition runs until Sunday, July 19 on the top floor of the Harlequin Shopping Centre.
