Battle for Haditha (15)

Star rating: ***
Dir: Nick Broomfield
With: Elliot Ruiz, Andrew McLaren, Matthew Knoll

On November 19, 2005, a US patrol was blown up in Haditha, Iraq, killing one marine. The initial reports from the US military said 15 Iraqis were also killed by the roadside bomb, and more in the shooting that followed. The truth, as Time magazine later reported, was different.

Nick Broomfield's riveting account shows the limits and value of the docudrama approach. As in his previous feature Ghosts, which looked at the deaths of Chinese migrant workers in Morecambe Bay, building characters into events makes us feel a greater connection to those involved. The documentary style also gives the film a certain urgency and importance. Where Broomfield falls down is in the quality of the drama, with roughly sketched characters who speak more like partici-pants in a public information film than real people. But these are forgivable flaws in a necessary film.

Filmhouse, Edinburgh, until March 9. Director Nick Broomfield will introduce tomorrow's 6pm screening and there will be a Q and A session afterwards.
