Dir: Leonard Abrahamson
With: Pat Shortt, Conor Ryan, Anne-Marie Duff

To watch this Irish comedy-drama is to invite into your life a gnawing feeling of foreboding and doubt. The cause of the latter can be nipped in the bud straight away. Pat Shortt, who plays the simple-minded petrol station employee at the film's heart, really is Tom from Father Ted, the guy who wore an "I Shot JR" T-shirt and told anyone who'd listen that he'd killed a man. Shortt's character, Josie, doesn't do anything so heinous in Leonard Abrahamson's film, but there's an edge to the comedy which hints that this corner of rural Ireland will turn out to be a long way from Ballykissangel. A spirited, moving performance by Shortt shows he's come a long way from Father Ted, too.
