Tammy Wynette - Stand By Your Man (Sony-BMG) ****

FORGET what you think you know about country music and cop an earful of this.

Everyone knows the title track and DIVORCE, not to mention the outrageous KLF collaboration on Justified and Ancient, but there's some real meat in this sparkling introduction to one of the last century's finest voices.

It's worth the price of admission for wronged woman tales like I Don't Wanna Play House and Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad alone.

Golden Ring - the highlight of her stormy years with singer George Jones - is a neglected gem, while Ways to Love a Man hints at humour and menace.

The First Lady of Country was the real deal, as Loretta Lynn and Emmylou Harris happily acknowledge; and her voice is the sound of heartache.
