The Black Crowes - Warpaint (Silver Arrow) ***

Now that Parkstone boy Paul Stacey has stepped back from his position as temporary Black Crowes guitarist to concentrate on being their producer, the band are back in business trotting out honest-to-goodness, leather-trousered, rockin' Americana of the kind that has served them very well for the last 18 years.

It's their first album of all-new material in seven years and the touchstones are as obvious as ever - Sticky Fingers/Exile-era Stones, early Faces, Allman Brothers, Creedence etc - but what else do you want? In lesser hands, the Crowes' way with their influences would render them as little more than tribute band custodians of classic rock, but Chris and Rich Robinson can turn enough of a tune to keep it fresh. Seek out We Who See the Deep.
