Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) ***
IT'S getting on for eight years since Erykah Badu released her last album, the standard-issue R&B of Mama's Gun. Citing writer's block and a need to grow up some more, she's back to celebrate the 10th anniversary of her genre-busting debut Baduizm with the first of three new albums this year.
At its best New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) is a psychedelic soul stormer that manages to tip Sly & the Family Stone, Funkadelic, Tina at her peak as well as Badu's contemporary Macy Gray without sounding like any of them.
Tracks like The Healer make their way with more broken, fractured beats, but it's the likes of Honey and Master Teacher that work best, combining a feel for funky '70s soul with a modern sonic collage that encases the album's heartfelt message.
