Police have reminded residents to take extra care when answering the door after an increase in the number of distraction burglaries.

Several burglaries have taken place after residents were conned into letting people claiming to be from the water board into their homes.

Police say people should check the identity of any callers before opening the door, using a security chain if they have one.

Identity cards are not always genuine and should be checked carefully.

Genuine callers will not mind if residents take their time or refuse to let them in, so do check their ID and phone their employer.

Police also reminded people there is no such company as the 'water board' and callers should be asked which firm they are from.

Anyone who is worried about a friend or neighbour, or sees anything suspicious, should call police on 08458 505 505.
