Whale in Thames

A northern lost bottle-nosed whale died after being stranded in the Thames in central London.

Millions watched worldwide as rescuers craned the 18ft (5m) mammal onto a barge, but it suffered a series of fatal convulsions while being transported to sea.

It is the first time the endangered species has been spotted in the river since records began nearly a century ago. The animals, which can weigh up to four tonnes, are usually found in deep North Sea waters.
