TENS of thousands of people are expected at the London Mela, the capital's biggest celebration of Asian music and culture.

Bollywood legend Usha Utup and rapper Ms Scandalous will be some of the highlights at the mela, held from noon to 8.45pm this Sunday in Gunnersby Park, west London, The festival will feature 12 zones, including contemporary and classical music and dance, street theatre, circus, cabaret, comedy, visual arts and spoken word.

Now in its third year, the mela is the climax of the Ealing Summer Festival and has previously attracted crowds of up to 85,000.

Entry is free of charge.

This year the Legends of British Bhangra - Alaap, DCS and Malkit Singh - will perform together for the first time.

Award-winning singer-songwriter Susheela Raman will entertain audiences with new songs from her forthcoming pop album.

Radio 1's Bobby and Nihal will present the London Flavas, a stage showcasing British urban Asian music by the likes of upcoming Panjabi star Juggy D.

Art fans will be able to watch as Lahore-based sculptor Karim Kahn create dazzling designs from ice, or see a vibrant installation of Kerelan ceremonial parasols by Chhatri-Nutkhut.

Street art highlights will include the world's largest wandering dhol drum, rickshaw rides and Nutkhut stilt-walkers.

There will also be an international food court, craft market and a giant funfair.

The mela is produced by Ealing and Hounslow councils and supported by the London mayor's office.
