CCTV to cause big bother for motorists
 |
| Eye spy: CCTV will record drivers' numberplate details. |
Londoners will face hefty parking fines from April under new Big Brother-style rules.
The Government has approved plans to allow councils to issue parking tickets remotely. Rather than the much-maligned traffic warden, CCTV cameras with numberplate recognition will catch parking breaches.
The DVLA will then hand over registration details of the driver who will be sent a fine to their home address.
The Government has specified, however, that this method can only be used where it is impractical or dangerous for a traffic warden to operate.
As usual, Londoners will face premium-rate fines up to £50 more than rates in the rest of the country.
But the move has been criticised by motoring group the AA.
"Enforcement should be about prohibiting obstructive parking, not about postal fines after the event," said a spokesman for the AA.
Private landowners have already been putting the CCTV enforcement into practice, prompting the Government to set out guidelines for the use of the DVLA's information.
"We know that is vitally important to protect people's information and that is why we introduced a whole package of measures to ensure information is only released when appropriate and is not misused," said a spokeswoman for the Department of Transport.
What do you think about these measures - a good way to catch pesky parkers or a ruthless Orwellian tactic? Leave your comments below.
