Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been arrested and cautioned in a row about his Yorkshire terrier, it has been confirmed.

The 44-year-old dashed out of Chelsea's player-of-the- year awards in Battersea Park when his wife Tami called to say police had come for their Yorkshire terrier.

He is said to have resisted officers who wanted to quarantine the pooch, fearing it had been taken abroad and back without the necessary jabs, according to the Sun.

The dog ran off and was never seized.

But today Mourinho's spokesman said it was all a "misunderstanding".

He said: "Jose Mourinho can confirm that he was cautioned by police, and released without charge earlier this morning after an incident involving his pet dog.

"The incident occurred due to a misunderstanding over documents required for veterinary regulations.

"Mr Mourinho would like to make it clear that his pet dog was bought in England from a reputable breeder and has had all its necessary inoculations.

"Full co-operation will be given to the authorities over any animal health issues."

A Scotland Yard spokesman confirmed officers went to an address in central London at 7.45pm yesterday.

They were joined by an official from the Animal Health and Welfare Service with the intention to seize the dog.

"We understand that this was because it was believed the dog had been taken out of the country and re-entered in breach of legislation to prevent diseases such as rabies," the spokesman said.

Officers talked to the owners about the pet's removal, he added.

"Following discussion, around 10pm, it is believed that the owner removed the animal from the home.

"A 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of obstructing police and was taken to a west London police station.

"He subsequently received a caution for obstructing police."

The dog was still at large, the spokesman said.

Westminster City Council said its dog warden was searching for Mourinho's pet.

Councillor Alan Bradley, cabinet member for street environment, said: "We are concerned for the welfare of any stray animal in a busy area like Westminster.

"Pets are part of the family for a lot of people and we hope Mr Mourinho's will be found soon."

If the council finds Mourinho's dog, it will contact Belgravia police station, the spokesman added.
