The senseless killing of Bowes Park shopkeeper Mahmut Fahri has devastated his family, friends and customers.

Mr Fahri, 59, who ran the Albion grocery store and off licence, in Whittington Road, where he was murdered by two men on Tuesday evening, was a respected member of the community, described as a man of principles' by those who knew him.

He had been trading in the area for many years, and was a family man with a wife, two children and three grandchildren, who took an active interest in community issues, particularly as a member of the Neighbourhood Watch committee.

Customer and friend Nathaniel Peter, 21, of Whittington Road, said: "He was a very gentle, kind approachable man very giving. He used to chat to so many people. They would go into his shop just to have a conversation, to see how he and his family were.

"He was a good man and I am terribly shocked by the news of his murder. My heart is just twisted. He was a healthy man with so many years ahead of him. I just hope the people who have committed this crime are caught.

"How could such a bad thing happen to such a good person?"

Enfield Southgate MP Stephen Twigg also knew Mr Fahri.

He is shocked by the news and attended the scene of the murder on Wednesday. He said: "This is a tragedy. My thoughts are with his widow and family.

"I have been talking to residents and they are all in shock. He was a well-liked figure."

Meanwhile, borough commander Chief Supt Simon O'Brien has moved to calm fears in the community.

He said: "People are right to feel concerned about this tragic death at this time of year.

"We have had a number of tragedies over the last few weeks, but they all appear unconnected by motive and I would say to people living in Bowes Park that it is still a safe place to live and work. These are very, very unusual events."

Mr Fahri's murder comes after the death of Antonio Roriz-Rubim, 36, who died after being attacked in The Limes Avenue, in New Southgate, on December 9, and the discovery of a body in a garage in Dartford Avenue, Edmonton, on December 8.
