A hospital showcased the work it is doing to restore movement to those with paralysis as part of a £10million challenge.

Staff from the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in Stanmore were featured in BBC Horizon documentary The £10 Million Challenge, which introduced the 2014 Longitude Prize.

The challenge will see the public vote to decide which one of six organisations will receive £10 million in research funding to address a major scientific challenge, which includes overcoming paralysis.

Dr Tom Carlson from the Aspire Centre demonstrated how the organisation is using brain-controlled robots to advance treatment.

He said: “In the UK, a person is paralysed every eight hours. How we can restore movement to those with paralysis is one of the biggest scientific challenges the world is facing today.

“The work we are doing with University College London at the RNOH is vital in advancing research in this area and I would encourage everyone to tune in tonight and support our bid by voting online.”
